ITALIAN STYLE

In Italy, the church heavily influenced both architecture and interior design during the 15th-17th centuries.  This period inspired important artists such as Boticelli, da Vinci, Michelangelo and Canaletto and continues to influence artists today.  Original treasures from this period are some of the most precious in the world

Frame designs during the 16th and 17th centuries were largely based on the cassetta style.  Cassetta panels in the frames were often ornamented with decorative techniques including sgraffito, pastiglia, and carved patterns and were primarily gilded.  The exquisite patterns used for frame ornamentation often orginated from cathedrals or historic Greek designs.

The opulence and dramatic display of ornamentation from this influential time is beautifully captured in Concerto's Italian style frames by Larson-Juhl.  These frames reflect some of the most authentic characteristics of classic Italian style -- from genuine gold water gilded accents to decorative techniques including sgraffito, pastiglia and carved ornamentation.

SPANISH STYLE

Spain's long history has produced innumerable influences on art and architecture such as renowned artists Diego Velazquez and Francisco Jose de Goya.  The bold style and dramatic scenes painted by Goya and the exquisite landscapes and life-like portraits painted by Velazquez eloquently reflect Spain's mark on the world.

Framed produced in Spain during the 17th century hand many similar influences to those created in Italy, though they tended to have more deeply carved patterns and higher contrast finishes.  These bold designs were primarily gilded and exuded an opulence reflective of the era.

Concerto's Spanish style frames emulate these historical designs.  Bold carvings, gilded ornamentation, hand finishing and aging techniques are all combined to present you with these fine frames.
FRENCH STYLE

During the reign of Louis XV, interior decoration, including frame design, came to the forefront.  The styles of the time reflected more curves and circles replicating scrollwork and swags used in interior design and artwork.

When Louis XVI became King in 1774, his reign marked a return to the classics -- the Neo-Classical period.  Designs during this time became simpler, with straighter lines and more symmetry; colors used were lighter in tone; and ornamentation became more delicate.

Concerto's French Style frames authentically replicate the exquisite patterns and ornamentations of these various times.  The elegant gilding and soft patinas on these frames come together to bring you fine finished corner frames with a French style.
DUTCH STYLE

The Dutch were among the first people to trade in exotic woods and incorporate the beauty of natural grain patterns into decorative items; foremost was the use of ebony.  They were highly influenced by machine made patterns in the later half of the 17th century and it was during this time that the ripple pattern, which is so often associated with Dutch style, began to be carved into thin ornamental strips of exotic woods and used on various types of decorative items.

Another characteristic associated with Dutch style were the dark, painted finishes often used to simulate the darker woods.  This ebonized finish was prevalent on furniture, frames and other types of decorative accessories.  Important works of art by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Dyck would likely be placed in frames with this masterful deep finish.

Concerto's Dutch style frames incorporate dark, painted finishes, ripple pattern ornamentation and gilded surfaces for an authentic look -- frames that will become the heirlooms of tomorrow.
AMERICAN STYLE

Prior to 1850, American frames were heavily influenced by European design.  After that time however, several important artists made their unique mark on American frame styles.

In the mid 1800's, the Hudson River School of painters became an influential group in the American art scene.  Known for their incredible depictions of the newly opened West and America's wilderness in the Northeast, their paintings too needed to be captured in frames.  The Hudson River School frames were generally deeply carved, ornamented and gilded to create a grand presence.

Also during that same period, artist James Mc Neil Whistler had a significant impact on the art world.  Though American born, he spent his adulthood living outside of the U.S. and incorporated several cultural influences into his works.  The style of frame named after this influential artist, the Whistler, has strong lines, but simpler with fewer embellishments than seen previously in American framing.  These frames have beautifully gilded surfaces and like the Hudson River School frames, have become representative of the American Frame Style.
CONTEMPORARY STYLE

Contemporary or "modern" refers to a period dating from 1860's through today and is used to describe the style and the ideology of art produced during this era.  Most historians agree that the modern art period began with an art show by Manet in 1863.  During the next hundred years, our perceptions of not just art, but how it would be presented changed.  No longer would the paintings of the day be presented in period frames.  The art of Picasso, Braque, Rouault, Matisse, Duchamp, Chagall, Kandinsky and their contemporaries necessitated new frame styles to compliment their art.

Designs with clean modern lines, influenced by the Bauhas architecture of the time, proved an effective way to showcase modern art.  Today this style is captured in Concerto's Contemporary Collection's unadorned simple forms and elegant style create the perfect harmny between frame and modern works of art.  The deep, dense luster of the gold and white gold on the surface of these frames is achieved through meticulous craftsmanship of artisans.
